New to Church?

You're sure of a warm welcome at St Mary's!

When and where do we meet?
Our church is at the corner of St Mary's Avenue and Kingswood Road, Shortlands.

Our main Sunday service is at 10.30am.  Most weeks this is a Eucharist service (a service with Holy Communion), with time to worship God through prayer, hymns and worship songs, to learn more about what it means to live as a Christian, and to take Communion together for those who wish to.  Children and families are welcome, with special provision made for children most Sundays during term time (see below).

At special times of the year, such as Harvest and Mothering Sunday, all ages stay in church for a family service at 10.30am.  These services are more informal, do not usually include Holy Communion, and children and young people from Junior Church or our uniformed organisations often play a part in helping to lead parts of the service.

Once a month we have a choral Evensong service at 6.30pm.  We also hold occasional informal and reflective services which help us worship and look at our faith in fresh ways.

What should I expect if I visit?
You'll receive a very warm welcome from people who will be able to answer your questions and help you decide where to sit.  We'll help guide you throughout the service if you like, and you can join in as much or as little as you like.

A communion service usually lasts a bit over an hour, and a family service a bit less.

Tea, coffee and biscuits are served after the 10.30am service - it's a great way to get to know people

What happens to the children?
Children and young people of all ages are an important part of the life of St Mary's, including our Sunday services.  During most 10.30am Sunday services in term time, the children and young people begin in church but then meet in their own groups for 30-40 minutes before rejoining for communion and the end of the service.  For details of the different groups and the dates on which they run, see Children and young people.

Playbags are also available during the 10.30am services, containing an assortment of small toys, books and activities for very young children to use during their time in church.
